Thank you

Dear Euan,

We wanted to say the biggest of thank yous.

Because the better we have both got to know you over the past 15 or so years, the more we have come to appreciate, understand and like you.

When we think of you, we think of your generosity, patience, understanding and friendliness.

Thank you for the patience you showed while being “guided” around the countryside in southwestern France by someone whose sense of orientation was (and is) suspect to say the very least.

For someone one who has travelled extensively, being left in the hands of a directionally challenged “I-think-we’ll-just-take-a-left-here” driver must have required immense self control. I know, had the roles been reversed, I wouldn’t have shown such composure.

An immense thank you for your generosity and hospitality when we visited you in Naples.

I’ll always remember that moment of shared bemusement when we went for a meal and I was asked how I wanted my roast pork “done”. “Preferably cooked” was our agreed response (once the waitress had left). I’ve since learnt that apparently pink pork is also perfectly acceptable alternative. I read about it somewhere but I forgot to tell you.

Thank you also for those many meals together in Florida, London and France and your wonderful nose for wines - including the Pinot Grigio which Henri discovered thanks to you, and which will always remind him of you. It was always a delight to discover what tipple you would be bringing when you and Anna came to stay with us. And we were never disappointed.

We’ll miss those visits and of course we shall miss you. But we retain some very treasured memories of time spent together.

Euan, from both of us, thank you

John and Henri
